Where are the records held? The main repositories for our catchment area are the London Metropolitan Archives, the Greenwich Heritage Centre  (http://greenwichheritage.org and the Bexley Local Studies and Archive Centre (www.bexley.gov.uk/service/lib-localstudies).   See “sources for parish records” pages.

My ancestor worked at the Arsenal. How do I find out more?  Few employee records have survived. There is a published book, “The Royal Arsenal” by O. Hogg, which mentions the main characters but records of munition workers, etc, appear to have been destroyed. There are some records at the National Archives (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

My ancestor was in the Navy . How do I find out more about this? The National Archives is the first place to search.

My ancestor was at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. How do I find out about his career there? The National Maritime Museum’s Caird Library in Greenwich holds these records.  However at the present time (September 2009) the records are not available because of building works. (http://www.nmm.ac.uk)

My ancestor was in the Army and was stationed in Woolwich.  What records should I search? Try the National Archives first, then Firepower, The Royal Artillery Museum, Royal Arsenal, London  SE18 6ST. (www.firepower.org.uk/research)
